How to Cut a Pre-Cast Concrete Wood Stove Base

A residential wood stove installation requires a non-combustible surface to support the stove and protect the floor. Many options are available, including tile, stone, brick and metal, but an inexpensive and easy to install alternative is to use one of many precast concrete hearths available. These precast hearths are available in several standard sizes and, for non-standard needs, the concrete base can be cut to fit.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Chalk snap line or straightedge
  • Circular saw & masonry blade
  • Particle mask
  • Safety glasses
  • Masking or vinyl tape (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Rest the precast concrete wood stove base on a flat, firm surface and mark both end points of the desired cut on the top surface at the opposing edges. Connect the two points with a chalk snap line or using a pencil and straightedge.

    • 2

Set the depth of cut of the circular saw's masonry blade to 3/8 inch. Starting the concrete cutting with a shallow scoring cut defines the cut line, making it easier to follow as dust from the cutting tends to obscure a pencil or chalked line.

    • 3

Start the cutting from either end of the marked cut line and move the circular saw along the line. Control the forward movement to allow the masonry blade to slowly cut the concrete and prevent overheating of the blade or saw.

    • 4

Reset the cutting depth of the saw to 3/4 inch and retrace the full length of the cut line.

    • 5

Continue to adjust the cutting depth in 3/8-inch increments and repeat the cutting until the concrete cut is complete.
