Make a smooth surface over the bricks by applying latex-modified thinset mortar. Use the flat edge of a notched trowel to smooth the thinset mortar. Wait for the mortar to dry for 24 hours.
Screw a temporary support ledge to the fireplace with 2-inch masonry screws and a screwdriver. Line a 1-by-2 inch board up with the firebox opening. This support will help you line up the tiles with the firebox and keep the tiles from sliding down the fireplace before the mortar dries.
Spread thinset mortar on the fireplace surround above the support ledge with a notched trowel. Set the tiles into the mortar. Start directly above the support ledge and then work up the fireplace surround. Set tile spacers between each of the tiles. Cut the tiles, as needed, on a tile saw. Let the tiles dry completely.
Unscrew the support ledge. Spread thinset mortar on the bottom portion of the fireplace surround with the notched trowel. Set the tiles on the bottom part of the fireplace in the same way that you installed the top half of the fireplace surround. Allow the tiles to set completely.
Take out the tile spacers from between the tiles. Use a putty knife to remove any dried thinset pieces from between the tiles. Spread grout over the tile with a grout float held at a 45-degree angle. Pull the float diagonally over the tiles to take away the excess grout. Wait 30 minutes for the grout to begin setting up then clean the tops of the tiles with a grout sponge. Allow the tiles to dry overnight.
