How to Mount a Rustic Mantle

One of the best ways to refresh a tired and dated looking fireplace is to replace the mantel. The mantel surrounds a fireplace and is typically made of wood, marble, brick or stone. Rustic wooden mantels are an ideal addition for homes that are decorated in a country or primitive style. To mount a rustic mantle, there are a few tools you will need to have on hand and some techniques that must be followed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing mantel. Use a pry bar to get between the mantel and the wall or the fireplace. Slip the end of the prybar behind the mantel and pull the bar towards you. If the old mantel is wood, it may crack during this process. If you plan on salvaging the old mantel, work carefully to avoid this.

    • 2

Sand down the surface underneath the old mantel. If there is glue or plaster behind the old mantel, it will need to be sanded down using a medium to rough grade of sandpaper. If any nails or screws are still in the wall, remove them.

    • 3

Hold up the new, rustic mantel where you want it placed. You will need a friend to help with this process. Use a level on the top of the mantel to make sure it is perfectly level before proceeding with the attachment process.

    • 4

Drill screws into the edges, top and bottom of the mantel. Start in one corner and anchor the mantel with a screw in the top and bottom of the side. Across the top and bottom, insert a screw every six inches. Once the mantel is firmly in place, double check with your level to make sure it is still perfectly level.

    • 5

Fill in the screw holes with wood putty. Use a color that matches your mantel as closely as possible. Put a small amount of putty into each hole and allow it to dry. Once it is dry, sand the surface to make sure it is smooth.
