How to Use a Gas Home Log Fireplace

Many builders resort to installing gas fireplaces in their home construction projects these days for the ease of use and convenience they provide to homeowners. Gas fireplaces offer conveniences such as immediate fire within seconds, attractive aesthetics and heat production; though, typically gas fireplaces are not well regarded for the heat they produce. You can easily install, maintain, and operate gas fireplaces if you want the fireplace experience without the demands of a wood burning fireplace.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ignition button. For gas fireplaces installed into walls, the ignition button and flame controls are often concealed behind the vents at the bottom of the unit's face. Other units have these controls directly on the unit itself, while still others have remotes or wall switches.

    • 2

Pull the vent, which should click loose from the fasteners, allowing you to remove it from the unit. Remove any possible flammable materials or furniture out of the way.

    • 3

Turn the dial clockwise to the area marked on the control reading "Ignite" or "IGN."

    • 4

Press the adjacent "Ignition" button located with the controls, which is usually red and marked. For electric ignition controls, the button will make a clicking sound when you press it. Press the button a few times. The pilot light, a small metal pipe inside the fireplace containing enough gas to start the fire, will ignite.

    • 5

Light the flame on the pilot manually if your unit does not have an electric ignition, using an extended match designed for lighting fireplaces, or a lighter. Avoid turning the controls up too high.

    • 6

Turn your fireplace switch to the "On" position. The flames will show in your fireplace.

    • 7

Turn the controls clockwise for increased flame or counter-clockwise for less flame to adjust your flame.

    • 8

Attach the vent face back in place on the unit.
