Installation Instructions for an Elmira Fireplace Insert

An Elmira fireplace insert installs in a masonry fireplace's firebox. An Elmira fireplace insert discharges smoke and toxic fumes through its exhaust port and into the fireplace's flue. Burning completely dried wood in an Elmira insert reduces the amount of creosote buildup inside of its chimney's flue. Excessive creosote buildup clogs the flue and restricts the smoke's flow through the Elmira insert's exhaust port and up the flue pipe. Creosote buildup causes many house fires. A yearly chimney flue cleaning eliminates creosote buildup.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out the masonry fireplace's firebox, using a flat shovel and broom. Remove all ash and debris from the firebox.

    • 2

Fill the firebox's ash dump and outside air vent, if equipped, with fiberglass insulation. Not all fireboxes have an ash dump or air vent.

    • 3

Place the three pieces of insulation from the Elmira fireplace insert's kit on the back side of the insert. The large piece of insulation overlaps the top and back of the insert and the two smaller pieces cover the sides.

    • 4

Wrap the insulation with the Elmira insert kit's four tie-down wires. Twist the end of each wire to a wire retainer, found on the back of the insert's face. Two wires wrap around the sides and back of the insert. Two wires wrap over the top of the insert.

    • 5

Reach into the Elmira insert and remove the insulation covering the exhaust port, using a knife to cut the insulation.

    • 6

Place one end of a 4-foot bubble level on the fireplace's hearth and position the other end of the level against the back of the fireplace's firebox. Adjust the back end of the bubble level until it reads level, using the bubble level's bubble gauge as a guide. Measure the distance between the bottom of the level and the firebox's floor with a tape measure.

    • 7

Turn the Elmira insert's leveling screws, found on the bottom of the back side of the insert, until the distance between the bottom of the adjustment screw and the bottom of the insert equals the measurement between the bottom of the bubble level and the firebox's floor. Turn the adjustment screws clockwise to raise the back of the insert and counterclockwise to lower the insert.

    • 8

Slide the Elmira fireplace insert into the fireplace's firebox. Adjust the insert's position until the insert's faceplate rests evenly against the firebox's face.

    • 9

Reach through the hole cut in the Elmira insert's insulation and align the fireplace flue pipe, if equipped, with the insert's flue-connection fitting. Slide the flue pipe onto the flue-connection fitting, using the manufacturer-supplied spike-handle tool to position the flue duct. Skip this step if the local building code does not require and the fireplace does not have a sleeved chimney flue.

    • 10

Position the insert's trim rail on top of the Elmira insert. The bolts on the back side of the rail slide into the holes found in the top of the insert. Reach into the insert and hand tighten the trim rail's nuts onto the bolts.

    • 11

Slip the ash catch into the slot below the Elmira insert's door.

    • 12

Position the decorative screens in the Elmira insert's screen channels, located on both sides of the door. Snap the screens into place.

    • 13

Slide the blower control knob onto its shaft, located above the right-hand side of the insert's door.
