How to Tear Down a Chimney

If you have an old brick or stone chimney that is no longer needed, you can either cover the top or tear down the fixture. The latter option will be a time-consuming project and will take a significant amount of physical labor. The best way to remove a brick or stone chimney is from top to bottom, to avoid injury from bricks or stones collapsing. Once the brick or stone chimney has been torn down, patch over the area where it stood.

Instructions

    • 1

Rent a dumpster to dispose of the old bricks or stones in the chimney. Have it placed near the chimney for easy disposal as you tear down the old brick or stone fixture.

    • 2

Lean or place a ladder against or near the chimney and put a pair of goggles, a dust mask, leather gloves, a cold chisel and hammer into a bucket. Climb the ladder with the bucket of supplies.

    • 3

Put on the goggles, dust mask and leather gloves. Pull the cold chisel and hammer out of the bucket.

    • 4

Approach the chimney and begin chiseling away the mortar joints between the bricks or stones. As bricks or stones come loose, throw them into the dumpster. Keep chiseling away all the mortar until every brick or stone has been removed down to the roof.

    • 5

Place the tools back in the bucket and climb down the ladder. Roll scaffolding next to the remaining chimney.

    • 6

Plug an extension cord into a nearby electrical outlet and connect an electric demolition hammer to the extension cord. Climb onto the scaffolding and chip away the mortar joints, freeing the bricks or stones from the fixture. Throw the bricks or stones into the dumpster as you go.

    • 7

Continue to demolish the chimney with the electric demolition hammer from the scaffolding down to the ground, removing the scaffolding when necessary. Toss any remaining bricks or stones into the dumpster to finish.
