Insulated Chimney Pipe Installation

Insulated pipe allows property owners to build a new chimney quickly and inexpensively compared to a traditional masonry fireplace. The pipe vents exhaust gases from coal, wood, oil and other fossil fuels. Installers can choose from six methods of installation, including wall installation, masonry chimney and four ceiling installations. The ceiling methods include flat, flat ceiling two-story installation, flat-offset or pitched ceiling.

Design the chimney system for the stove or fireplace. Plan the layout of the system to fit between wall studs, floor joists or roof rafters. Create a layout with as few bends or elbows as possible. Make the layout as straight as possible for an efficiently operating appliance and to avoid the build-up of creosote. Refer to the local building code department to learn the installation requirement and whether the project requires a permit.

Refer to the installation instructions for determining the chimney pipe's diameter. Purchase a chimney pipe kit based on the type of installation. Installers usually buy a chimney installation kit that includes the components for installing a basic system, including roof termination cap, wall thimble adapter, lengths of pipe and other components. The wall installation method is common for do-it-yourself installers. This method requires a "thru-the-wall" chimney pipe installation kit. Make sure the pipe is UL-approved (Underwriter's Laboratory) stainless steel class "A" insulated chimney pipe because it's the only chimney pipe approved for installation in walls, floors or ceilings.

Follow the instructions for installing the insulated tee and plug. Secure the wall support component on the exterior wall. Install a pipe length in the opening of the tee. Make sure the pipe has a minimum clearance of 2 inches from the structure's siding. Continue the vertical installation of pipe lengths up the side wall. Install at least one band. The band is an adjustable pipe wall strap that provides 2 to 6 inches of clearance.

Extend the chimney pipe a minimum of 3 feet above the point where the pipe penetrates the roof line or according to local building codes. Install the metal flashing at the point where the pipe penetrates the roofline. Secure the termination cap to the pipe with the screws provided in the kit.
