How to Raise the Height of a Flue Pipe

A fireplace is a wonderful feature of a home and can actually become the centerpiece of the living space. The flue, a lining in the chimney, is typically made of metal and protects the masonry from soot buildup. The flue pipe extends the entire length of the chimney. If the flue pipe does not reach the top of the chimney, you may need to extend it. Often, you must increase the updraft of a chimney using a flue extender to improve fireplace performance.

Things You'll Need

  • Flue pipe extender with top chimney flange
  • Electric drill
  • Masonry drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all debris or chimney cap from the existing chimney, exposing the top part of the chimney.

    • 2

Place the chimney flange over the chimney opening, and mark the location of the fastening holes. Check to ensure the chimney flange opening is not smaller than the chimney opening.

    • 3

Drill holes in the chimney masonry at the marks made from the chimney flange using an electric drill and masonry bit.

    • 4

Place the chimney flange over the drilled holes, and secure the flange to the top of the chimney using bolts (usually provided with the flange).

    • 5

Add the flue pipe extender to the chimney flange, and secure it with the side screws (usually provided with the extender).
