How to Redo a Corner Fireplace

Outdated corner fireplaces can drag down the style of any home. An inexpensive way to make over your fireplace is with tile. By installing the tiles over the brick fireplace you will completely redesign the look and feel of the fireplace. The job is not difficult, but it can take some time because you will need to wait overnight several times while the mortar or grout is drying.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the bricks and smooth the surface of the fireplace with latex-modified thin set mortar. Mix the thin set mortar and then spread it on the fireplace with the straight edge of a notched trowel. Allow the mortar 24 hours to dry.

    • 2

Decide on a layout for the tiles. Mark the starting point for the tiles on the fireplace with a pencil before you begin tiling. You can also screw a board to the fireplace with masonry screws to hold the tiles directly above the firebox in place while they dry. The board should then be removed and tiles installed in its place.

Apply thin set mortar to the corner fireplace with a notched trowel. Place the tiles in the mortar. Push tile spacers in between the tiles to keep the appropriate spacing. Use a tile saw to cut the tiles as necessary. Allow the tiles 24 hours to dry.

Remove the tiles spacers from the tiles. Mix the grout per manufacturer directions. Spread the grout over the tiles with a grout float. Hold the grout float at a 45 degree angle and move it across the tiles to remove any extra grout.

Clean the tiles with a grout sponge. The sponge should be damp and not wet. Run the sponge over the tiles to remove the extra grout residue and slightly shape the grout. Give the grout 24 hours to dry.
