Cons of Gel Fireplaces

Gel fireplaces offer atmosphere and eye appeal. Fueled by alcohol or ethanol gel instead of wood, gel fireplaces fit into any decor. Favored because they do not need a chimney, these ventless fireplaces are easy to install, inexpensive compared to wood fireplaces and generate no soot or ashes. Disadvantages to these alternative fuel fireplaces are primarily related to humidity and safety.
  1. Function

    • A gel fire burns with alcohol or ethanol fuel, a thick, gel-like liquid poured into a decorative pot, torch or converted fireplace. When it is lit, the fuel burns with flames ranging from clear or blue to yellow and red. Because the gel is alcohol-based, it produces no smoke or soot as traditional fuels do. The gel leaves no residue and burns two to three hours per container. Because it requires little space, gel fireplaces fit in existing fireplaces, on wall mounts or as tabletop firepots.

    Humidity

    • As the gel fuel burns, it releases small amounts of carbon dioxide and water. In homes that are low in humidity, this causes few problems. In homes that are in humid environments or airtight with few drafts, the water accumulates as moist air or high humidity and water vapor condenses. The excess humidity causes mildew and mold harmful to fabrics, books, walls and furnishings. Many allergy sufferers and asthmatics cannot tolerate mold or mildew due to respiratory reactions.

    Safety

    • A dry chemical fire extinguisher can smother flames.

Gel fuel is highly flammable. Many gel fireplaces burn with clear, almost invisible flames. When the liquid fuel is accidentally spilled, the flames ignite the fuel, causing an explosion or flash fire. The gel fire cannot be extinguished in the traditional stop, drop and roll fire smothering method. The gel sticks to clothing or skin and continues burning. Use baking soda or a commercial dry chemical fire extinguisher to smother the flames. The fire may appear to be out, but when gel is poured near the fireplace for refueling, flash fires also occur as the alcohol fumes ignite.

    Considerations

    • Install a gel fireplace or device at least 3 feet from furniture or combustible materials. Keep children and animals several feet away from the gel fireplace, as they may not see the flames. Ensure the fireplace or device is on a stable surface and will not tip or spill when accidentally jolted or bumped. Because of the safety hazards, some regions prohibit gel fireplaces. Check local ordinances before purchasing or installing a gel fireplace or device. Store gel fuel away from the fireplace. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher typically rated Class ABC.
