How to Remodel Ugly Brick Fireplace Bookshelves

The fireplace and any connecting shelves are automatically the focal point of a room. If the shelves are outdated or ugly, it can throw off the room's entire look. Don't remove unattractive fireplace shelves -- update them instead. Paint, stain and sandpaper can do a lot to integrate the shelving system with the rest of the room's decor. You can also add other decorative elements to add definition.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the shelves.

    • 2

Sand down the shelves with medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Vacuum all remaining sandpaper dust from the shelves with a vacuum extension. Wipe away all dust and debris with a damp cloth.

    • 4

Apply stain or paint to the shelves. Stain will enhance the grain and change the color. An espresso gel stain can modernize an outdated shelving unit. Paint will cover an unsightly grain pattern. If painting, first apply two coats of primer. Allow each coat of primer to dry before applying the second coat. Then apply the paint.

Smooth contact or wallpaper on the back of the shelving unit. This will draw your eyes to the unit and add definition since the backing and shelving are two different colors.

Install curtain hooks over the top one or two shelves. Then place a linen shade in the hooks. Close this shade to hide any clutter. Another option for decluttering the unit is to hide objects in baskets or decorative boxes.
