How to Use the Ash Dump As a Gas Line Chase

Changing your wood burning fireplace to a gas insert is simplified if you have an existing ash dump. The ash dump provides a path from the inside of the fireplace to the basement of the building where the gas main is located. Consult with you local building authority to see if this is allowed in your area. Also inquire about what specific rules are involved with running a gas line in this manner.

    • 6

Push the gas copper pipe down through the ash pit door, in the fireplace, until it hits the bottom.

Go back downstairs and insert your hand into the ash pit clean out. Grab the pipe and slowly pull it out the ash pit clean out. Do not bend the pipe in a way that kinks the pipe or damages it in any way.
