Outline the area around the stove where you intend to install the brick material, using a pencil and chalkline. Do this according to your plans, based on the type and size of your wood burning stove.
Measure and mark your foam board insulation, with foil backing, ensuring it matches your outline. Cut the board along your measurements with a utility knife.
Position the board so the foil backing faces toward the stove. Use a drill and 1 ¼-inch drywall screws to drill the board to the studs.
Prepare mortar in a wheelbarrow, according to the mortar manufacturer’s specifications. Mix the mortar until it acquires a pancake batter consistency. Scoop out the mortar with a trowel and add a half-layer of mortar, moving the trowel in an up-and-down pattern, over the area where you intend to install the bricks.
Set the first layer of bricks onto the mortar, pressing down firmly to help settle them in place. Install the first row from left to right and straighten each layer as needed, using a level. Place a thin layer of mortar on top of the first row of bricks and install the second row on top of the first row, again moving left to right. Repeat this technique until the brick surround reaches the desired height. Scrape off any excess mortar that squeezes out between the bricks with the trowel. Allow the mortar to dry overnight.
