How to Get Heat From a Wood Burning Stove Upstairs

A wood stove can be an efficient source of heat for your home. If used correctly, wood stoves generate large amounts of heat. However, it is easy for this heat to get trapped in the room where the stove is located. To make efficient use of the fuel you're burning, you should come up with ways to distribute the heat to the rest of the house. This allows you to greatly reduce the load on your furnace.

Instructions

    • 1

Open any doors that connect the floor with the wood stove to the floor where you want the heat to go. Keep them wide open the entire time you want the heat to transfer.

    • 2

Turn on any blower or fans that you have with your wood stove. If you need to increase the air flow, buy an additional fan to add on to your stove. You can find fans that simply sit on top of the stove and operate by using its heat energy to power their blades.

    • 3

Set up extra fans to push the warm air from your wood stove toward the upper floor.

    • 4

Install some through floor vents in the ceiling above your wood stove. If you don't feel comfortable cutting through your floor, have a contractor perform the work. The goal is to put adjustable vent channels between the ceiling over the stove and the floor above to provide a more direct air channel.
