How to Frame for Stucco Walls

The addition of stucco to a home's exterior can be a do-it-yourself project with the right materials and tools. With the addition of color or decorative masonry, the stucco becomes a work-of-art on the exterior of the house. Stucco may be added directly onto concrete or brick homes, but siding, exterior tiles or plaster finishes must be removed. A frame must be created on the outer studs of the home for the application of the mud-like substance.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch 18-gauge or higher stainless steel wire across the open frame of the house. Start at the first post on the left of the wall at the very top. Nail the wire to every fourth framing pole with U-shaped nails. Repeat this every 6 to 8 inches down the wall. Be sure to place a piece of wire along the bottom of the frame regardless of the spacing.

    • 2

Apply waterproof roofing or building felt to the wall. Cover the wall with the rolled felt, using 2-inch nails at each frame post, beginning at the top and working downward. Overlap the edges of the paper at the end of the roll and upon beginning a second and third row of the paper.

Stretch stucco mesh over the felt and hold in place with U-shaped nails. Use the nails from the felt as a guide to find the frame posts. Attach to every post at the top, center and bottom of the mesh.
