How to Remove an Outside Vent in Brick

Vents that connect the interior of a house to the exterior can function as unintentional areas of heat loss. For vents that are being used, this is unavoidable. You can reduce unnecessary heat loss by removing old vents and covering over them on the outside surface of your home. After removing a vent covering from a brick wall, you can fill in the space where the vent was to counteract heat loss and make the wall look better.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws from the face of the vent cover using the appropriate screwdriver. For older vent covers, this is probably a flathead screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the vent pipe that is behind the cover from the wall either by severing it and removing it from the wall or by pushing it back into the wall cavity.

    • 3

Remove any partial bricks that abut the opening where the vent was. If the vent opening is exactly the size of a single brick, you won't need to remove any bricks. Chip away the mortar surrounding partial or broken bricks with a cold chisel and a hammer, then loosen the bricks with a small sledgehammer and remove them.

    • 4

Acquire replacement bricks that are the same size and color as the bricks in the surrounding wall. Spread mortar across the face of the lowest part of the opening and insert a brick into the opening. Tap down the brick to seat it with the handle of your trowel.

    • 5

Insert the rest of the bricks in the same manner, then fill in any gaps in the joints around the bricks with mortar.

    • 6

Work over the surface of the mortar joints with a mason's jointing tool to leave a neat, semicircular impression in the mortar.
