How to Flash a Porch Stoop

Porch stoops are mini-porches that usually take up a small area, between 3 and 5 feet in width, and usually built out of concrete, but that can also be wood. Similar to a full-size deck, the edge of the home where the porch stoop meets the outside of the house needs to be flashed to protect the home from moisture buildup over the years, which leads to rot and insects. The same principles for deck flashing are used, which means all you need are some basic carpentry skills and knowledge, along with some spare time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any of the house wrap or moisture barrier for the siding (such as tar-based felt paper) to completely expose the edge of the house where you will install the stoop. Use a utility knife to cut the excess away so that you have the ledger board (for a wood stoop) or the concrete wall of the foundation (for a concrete-poured stoop).

    • 2

Clean and scrub the ledger board or concrete wall all the way to the ground with the scrub brush and water. Remove all dirt and debris and allow the surface to dry completely before installing the flashing, preferably for at least 24 hours. Do not attempt to install the flashing if the installation surface is damp or has dirt/debris on it.

    • 3

Remove the backing on the self-adhering flashing and place it on the installation surface, covering the wall completely where you will install the stoop. Run it up and over the top edge of the ledger board, as well as the face of the board. For foundation walls, completely cover the concrete. Run the flashing up under the bottom edge of the lowest section of moisture barrier by at least 3 inches. Install your stoop afterward.
