Keep your gloves and goggles handy so you can protect yourself while you work.
Use several hammers during the project. A roofing hatchet drives in nails; a claw or ripping hammer can help pull flashing and nails out; and a regular, all-purpose hammer is handy for many general jobs.
Apply caulk to the edges around flashing with a caulking gun. This is handy to have for many projects.
Create plumb lines using a chalk snap line. Pull the chalk-doused string taut along measured points and snap it against the roof to create straight lines. Always keep your chalk snap line dry.
Cut through tiles or repair wood using a circular saw. A power saw is also extremely effective but more expensive. You can rent a power saw for the project. Utility knives and special blades are also useful for cutting tiles and virtually anything else.
Keep tin snips handy for cutting tiles, flashing and other metal objects.
Smooth roofing cement into position with a flat, pointed trowel.
Attach shingles using galvanized roofing nails that are 1 inch long. A pouch or other container for the nails will keep them handy.
Acquire a staple gun or nail gun as needed, renting if you prefer along with a compressor. These make the process go faster and save you money in the long run.
Climb a strong, sturdy ladder to get on the roof. Use a ladder with adjustable feet so you can level it, making it safer to use. Always use care when climbing ladders, and make several trips when you are carrying supplies to the roof.
