How to Put on a New Tin Roof in Tennessee

Standing seam “tin” roofs, attractive for residential roofs, are actually steel that is galvanized with tin. You clip together seams that rise above the surface of the panels and run parallel to the roof. You should only install a tin roof should if the roof has a slope or pitch of 4:12, meaning it rises 4 feet for every 12 feet of length. You should be able to buy panels at most building supply companies in larger cities and towns in Tennessee.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Install rolls of roofing underlayment with plastic cap nails. Begin at the eaves and work to the roof ridge. Underlayments are typically marketed in rolls that are 3 feet to 4 feet 6 inches wide. Wider rolls are better. Overlap each layer by 12 inches.

    • 2

Lay your roof panels out on the ground to make sure they fit your roof when you assemble them. Plan for vent pipes and a chimney if you have one.

    • 3

Bend up a 1-inch to 1 ¼-inch lip with your seamer on the outside edge of your first panel and last panels. You will later use this bend to secure your gable trim.

    • 4

Bend a 7/8-inch fold curving down at the bottom of the panels. This bend will hook over the drip edge at the eaves.

    • 5

Install the drip edge at the eaves with galvanized roofing nails. Overlap sections by at least 2 inches and space nails from 8 to 12 inches apart.

    Install Panels

    • 6

Curve the bottom of the first panel over the drip edge on the eave. Work from left to right on the roof. Align the side of the panel flush to the rake board on the gable. Screw one flat-head screw 1 inch from the top of the panel to hold it into place.

    • 7

Attach the first panel to the deck using clips set 10 to 12 inches apart for the length of the panel. If you live in a high wind area use two screws for each clip or set clips 6 to 8 inches apart.

    • 8

Hook the bottom of the second panel over the drip edge. The left edge of each panel has a female recession that fits over a male ridge to form the standing seam. Set the female recession over the male ridge and tap the seam into place with the rubber handle of your hammer. Attach the clips along the panel. Continue until you have all the panels installed.

    • 9

Hook the gable trim over the curve on the sides of the end panels. Pull the trim down and secure it with the hex screws and rubber gaskets set 12 inches apart.

Install Flashing, Z-bar and Ridge Cap

    • 10

Place flashings around vents, seal with caulk, and secure with hex head rubber gasket screws set 1 ½ to 2 inches apart.

    • 11

Cut z-bar to fit your chimney if you have one. Apply over caulk so it will be watertight.

    • 12

Apply caulk then the ridge cap with 3-inch overlaps. Do not use screws on your ridge cap.
