How to Build a Brick Grill With a Gas Insert

Outdoor brick grills add a level of functionality and fun to a backyard. Friends and family can easily cook at almost anytime of year without having to haul out a hefty portable barbecue. However, some people might not have the funds to pay a contractor to build a brick grill; the labor alone can be extremely expensive. It is possible to construct a home brick grill from scratch, along with a gas insert, for a safe and clean cooking alternative to charcoal grilling.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location for the brick grill. It should be a level, concrete surface away from any flammable objects, such as roof overhangs.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the intended grill along the concrete ground with the measuring tape. Mark the four corner points that designate the square or rectangular shape of the grill with a pencil on the concrete.

    • 3

Connect the four corner points by drawing a line between each point with a straight edge and pencil on the concrete.

    • 4

Place fire-resistant mortar on the concrete along the inside perimeter of the drawn lines with a trowel. Make sure that the mortar amount on the concrete is as wide as the bricks. Create a trench in the middle of the mortar's width with the trowel. This furrow allows the excess mortar to spill outward when the brick is positioned.

    • 5

Place one brick at each of the four corner points. Press the brick into the mortar firmly with your hands.

    • 6

Spread mortar on the bricks' ends with the trowel. Position another brick beside the corner brick. Allow about three-eighths of an inch of space between the adjacent bricks so that temperature expansion and contraction can occur over time without cracking the construction.

    • 7

Repeat step 6 until the grill's base is complete.

    • 8

Add mortar to the top of the installed bricks and repeat step 6 until the grill's main structure is finished. Each brick grill has a different customized shape; you will need to follow your particular design for any additional brick-laying positions.

    • 9

Attach a gas tube onto the back of the gas insert with a wrench. Make sure that the connection is secure.

    • 10

Slide the gas insert into the brick grill with your hands. Bolt the insert to the brick grill using the manufacturer's fasteners with a socket wrench or screwdriver. Each gas insert producer uses a different fastening system. Consult the insert's manual for specific fastener information.

    • 11

Attach the open end of the gas tube from the gas insert to the propane gas tank with a wrench.

    • 12

Turn on the propane tank and gas insert. Test the grill to verify that it heats up for cooking.
