Proper Installation of Bay Window Wells

One factor to consider when converting an unfinished basement into a finished room is lighting. The basement's subterranean location limits the amount of natural light the basement receives, but you can increase the amount of natural light available by installing a bay window. When installing a window that extends beneath ground level, you must install a window well to act as a wall that keeps the surrounding soil away from the window.

  • Prefabricated window well
  • Spray paint
  • Shovel
  • Gravel
  • Rake
  • Tamp

Instructions

    • 1

Place the prefabricated window well against the house where you will install the bay window. Position the window well so that the open end is against the house. Mark the outline of the window well on the ground with spray paint. Remove the window well when you are one.

    • 2

Dig a hole inside the spray-painted line that is deep enough that 6 inches of the window well extends above the ground. This prevents water from flowing into the well. Dig out another 4 inches of dirt inside the hole to allow for a layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole.

    • 3

Fill the hole with 4 inches of gravel. Rake the gravel smooth and tamp it down.

    • 4

Place the window well into the hole. Push the well against the house and mark the location for the fasteners provided with the well. Remove the well after you mark the holes.

    • 5

Drill pilot holes into the house. Use a hammer drill with a masonry drill bit. Wear safety goggles when drilling the holes.

    • 6

Apply a thick bead of rubberized roof cement to the edges of the window well that come into contact with the house.

    • 7

Place the window well into the hole. Press it firmly against the house, and attach it with the fasteners.

    • 8

Apply a thick bead of rubberized roof cement to the joints where the window well comes into contact with the house to seal them.

    • 9

Add 3 more inches of gravel inside the window well. Rake it smooth and tamp it down. Fill the gap between the ground and the outer edge of the window well with gravel.
