Improve the durability and life of a wooden boat dock by adding 2 inches of Quikrete to the surface. Quikrete manufactures a fiber-reinforced deck mix that is specifically formulated for repairing decks. The product is made with cement, fibers, graded aggregates and corrosion-inhibiting additives.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the amount of Quikrete Deck Mix necessary to complete your job. An 80-pound sack of Quikrete Deck Mix will yield about .6 cubic feet of deck. A deck poured 2 inches thick will require .16 cubic feet of deck mix per square foot of area. Each bag of Quikrete will cover 3.75 square feet to a depth of 2 inches.

    • 2

Apply 1-by-6-inch forming lumber to both sides and the end of the dock to be surfaced with the deck mix. Set the adjustable square to 2 inches as a gauge for the form depth. The top of the forming lumber must be 2 inches higher than the existing wood deck. Nail the forming lumber to the dock with 16 penny nails placed 6 inches apart.

    • 3

Cut the reinforcing mesh to fit inside the forming lumber using concrete mesh cutters. Raise the reinforcing mesh with 1-inch concrete mesh spacers, placed as necessary, to suspend wire at the mid-point of the deck thickness.

    • 4

Mix the Quikrete Deck Mix in a rotary mixer. Mix two sacks per mixer batch with 3 quarts of water per sack. Dump finished mixture in a wheelbarrow and begin pouring deck mix at the farthest end of the dock. Tamp the poured material in place with the concrete tamping tool. Use a screed board to maintain the 2-inch depth established by the forms.

    • 5

Trowel the deck mix level. Create a non-slip surface on the deck mix with a coarse-bristled push broom. Pour, trowel and finish in a continuous pour from the outer of the dock to the shore.

    • 6

Nail a 1-by 2-inch end-piece to the side forms where the dock meets the shore. Leave all forms in place as side and end protection for the poured deck material. Sprinkle the finished deck lightly with water every two hours to aid curing.
