Proper Way to Seal a Vent Pipe

If you want to avoid future plumbing problems, properly seal your vent pipes. Vent pipes are usually located on the top of your roof. Houses have one or more vent pipes, depending on the size of the house and the way the plumbing was constructed. Vent pipes distribute air and air pressure when you flush toilets or drain the water from your kitchen sink. If your vent pipes are not properly sealed, moisture forms in your roof, which causes roof and plumbing damage. Seal your vent pipe with a plastic pipe collar and silicone caulk.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the nails and shingles or roofing material around the vent pipe on the roof, using the claw end of a hammer.

    • 2

Insert a 2-inch plastic pipe collar around the vent pipe. The pipe collar is level with the roof. The hole in the pipe collar should match the diameter of the vent pipe.

    • 3

Strike roofing nails into the holes on the base of the pipe collar to secure it, using a hammer. Clean the pipe collar and vent pipe with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to remove dust, dirt and debris. Let the area dry for 3 minutes.

    • 4

Squeeze a layer of silicone caulk between the edges of the vent pipe and the pipe collar, using silicone caulk and a caulk gun. Silicone caulk is water resistant. Let the caulk dry for 12 hours.

Position the shingles back on the roof and nail them, using a hammer and roofing nails.
