How to Drill a 1-Inch Hole in Concrete for a Pool Fence

Installing a fence around a pool is an important safety feature and is even a legal requirement in some states. Pool fences consist of a variety of materials but must typically anchor into the pool deck surface. Since pool decks often consist of concrete, drilling 1-inch anchoring holes can seem challenging. However, you can rent special tools which speed the process up and greatly lessens the amount of labor involved.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pool fence into position so that you can determine the proper placement of the hole. Look at the lower brackets on the fence where the screw or bolt holes are and insert a pencil through them to mark the underlying concrete pool surface. Set the fence out of the way.

    • 2

Put on the proper safety gear including safety glasses, a dust mask and ear plugs. Then install a carbide-tipped drill bit into a hammer drill using the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 3

Measure up 1 inch from the base of the drill bit using a ruler and wrap a piece of masking tape around it to designate the proper drilling depth.

    • 4

Plug the cord of the hammer drill into an outdoor electric outlet and place the tip of the drill bit on top of the pencil mark.

    • 5

Press down on the drill with firm force to prevent it from moving and then squeeze the trigger. Hold the drill in place as it creates the hole in the concrete. Continue drilling until the bottom of the tape on the bit reaches the surface of the concrete.

    • 6

Release the trigger and set the drill aside. Open a can of compressed air and direct the nozzle toward the hole. Press the nozzle to blow out the concrete dust inside the hole.

    • 7

Proceed with installing the pool fence.
