Roof Lighting Ideas

The roof is sometimes one area that is overlooked when installing lighting. However, there are many ways that the roof line can be used to provide lighting that is creative as well as functional. Walk around your home and consider how lighting from the rooftop can enhance the overall look and curb appeal of your home as well as contribute to making your home safer for you and your family.
  1. Security Lighting

    • A home that is well lighted creates an inviting look for guests and an uninviting look for potential burglars. You can mount and install floodlights on the roof in key areas to demonstrate that your home is protected and to send criminals away from your property. Use the corner spots on the roof as a guide for installation, starting with the corners that border walkways and driveways. Add motion sensors tied in to your security system so the lights turn on when they detect movement on walkways. In addition, light the back areas of your home, including the patio and back doors. Lights on the roof will be difficult for those with bad intentions to disable.

    Landscape and Directional Lighting

    • Lights from the roof lines can be used creatively to highlight the landscaping of your home. Most landscaping lighting is placed on the ground and directed upwards to highlight the home and garden areas. However, if you use the roof line as an additional position for lighting, you can cast lighting downward to highlight different areas in your landscaping. For example, a flood light can be positioned on the rooftop to accent a stately tree in your front yard or to draw attention to a water feature, garden or swimming pool in your backyard.

    Natural Lighting

    • Lighting is not limited to appliances or exterior applications. You can use skylights to let the sunshine in during the day and enjoy the stars at night. This is a good solution to brighten upstairs rooms such as a bedroom or a room used for an office or studio space that’s right below the roof. By installing skylights, you can reduce the dependence on artificial light from lamps and lighting fixtures and bring in natural sunlight.

    Seasonal Decorative Lighting

    • The Christmas holiday season is the time of year to light up your house in grand style. Hanging lights along roof lines makes a home look all decked out for the holidays. However, putting up lights and taking them down can be a chore. One way to get around the hassle is to install permanent clips on the roof, so you don’t have to go through the steps of spacing and measuring holders for strings of lights every season. You can even light up your home to celebrate other occasions such as birthdays, backyard barbecues, indoor parties and Independence Day celebrations.
