Remodeling Entrance Doorways

Some homeowners may want to remodel their front entrances every decade or so. A well-crafted door system and surrounding materials can begin to look outdated, regardless of how good it looked when first installed. By adding new door color, glass panels or two doors to replace a single door, you can really change the curb appeal of the house. Amenities such as lighting, house numbers, porch plants or a porch roof can help, too. Review home design books and remodeling magazines to get ideas.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the front of the house to create a new look. Sketch the entrance door as a double-door system with side panels of glass, as one option. Draw the entrance with a more formal porch, for example, to enhance the doorway. Draw a brick walkway leading to the house to add visual appeal to the overall entrance area.

    • 2

Plan how to install new doors to fit the house facade. Call experts to cut through brick or rework stucco to enlarge the door opening, for example. Don't attempt to manage these tasks yourself, or you may devalue the house or cause cracks in the masonry work. Use graph paper to plan how doors will fit on the house facade. Make sure the installation of the doors looks correctly spaced from every angle.

    • 3

Use high-quality molding around the door opening. Buy oak, for example, to construct the door perimeter and decorative trim work. Stain the wood to feature the wood grain. Use paint and stain on doorway entrance surfaces, as another option. Paint the solid surfaces of doors pale gold but stain the surrounding wood trim and molding with deep mahogany-colored stain. Be sure to prime metal doors before adding oil-based or enamel paint in a new color.

Rework the porch trim, overhang and posts to enhance the doorway. Buy detailed trim work to install around the perimeter of the overhang. Purchase high-end trim with three-dimensional designs that will be visible from curbside. Install square or round wooden posts that add an elegant touch to an existing porch.

Add accessories to draw attention to the entrance. Buy brass house numbers and install them with screws into wooden framework near the door area. Install a brass mailbox on the house facade near the front door entrance as well. Purchase two concrete containers to hold identical topiary bushes on each side of the door. Install hardware on the porch ceiling for a couple of hanging baskets of flowers.
