How to Frame a Gabled Eave

Many houses will have gables depending on the slope of their roof. The gables will be at both ends of the house, with gabled eaves overhanging from the exterior wall. Depending on the construction and length of the gable, the eaves may sag due to the weight of the boards and roofing material. You can prevent this by framing a gabled eave with adequate support.

Things You'll Need

  • Roof trusses
  • Gable rafter
  • Saber saw
  • Hammer
  • 2 1/2-inch nails
  • 2-inch by 4-inch stud boards

Instructions

    • 1

Nail down the roof trusses 24 inches on center until reaching the end where you will create the gable eave overhang. Create notches in the gable rafter that are 4 inches wide and 2 inches deep by using the saber saw. Space the notches 4 feet along the gable rafter.

    • 2

Nail the gable rafter in place with the hammer and 2 1/2-inch nails. The gable rafter should be flush with the side of the house. Place 2-inch by 4-inch stud boards into the notched spaces with the ends overhanging over the side of the house to create the eave.

Nail the 2-inch by 4-inch stud boards in place along the gable rafter and at the end against the roof trusses. Place an end board on the edge of the stud boards to finish the frame.
