Removing Tree Roots From Under a Patio

Landscaping can change a dull and drab yard into a breathtaking sight to behold. With all the excitement of sprucing up your yard, you may not think about the years to come. One common mistake is placing sidewalks, driveways and patios too close to trees. There are many considerations to be made when planning your landscaping, and tree location is one of them. All tree roots should be removed from the construction area before adding structures, such as a patio. If you do not remove all underlying tree roots, they can wreak havoc with the construction and cause the patio to rise

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the concrete around the area where the root is causing damage. It will be necessary to remove enough of the concrete patio that the tree root will be exposed. Wear gloves to prevent injury to your hands. Depending on the amount of concrete to be removed, you may need to bust it into smaller, easier-to-handle pieces. If this is necessary, put on work gloves and safety goggles then use a sledgehammer to tear up the concrete into manageable pieces.

    • 2

Dig around the root with a shovel. Remove enough dirt to expose the root completely.

    • 3

Cut the root off as far back as possible to eliminate any future concrete issues with an ax or spade and remove it. Make the cuts as smooth and clean as possible. If you want to save the tree, cut only the necessary roots to eliminate the problem.

    • 4

Paint the cut end of the root that is attached to the tree with pruning paint. This will help the wound heal and increase the chance of the tree surviving.

    • 5

Use the shovel to fill in the hole where the root was removed with dirt or gravel.

    • 6

Repair the concrete or replace the concrete slab.
