How to Let Out the Clutch On a Tractor

The technique of letting out the clutch on a tractor used in garden remodeling or landscaping is similar to the same maneuver in a car. It should be executed smoothly and gradually in tandem with a balanced increase in throttle in order to safely change from one gear to another. Tractors have slightly different gear-shift patterns, depending on the make and model, so familiarize yourself with your tractor's gear positions before depressing the clutch for the first time.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the operating instructions for your tractor before use, and follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines and recommendations for proper use of the tractor.

    • 2

Start the tractor with the gear shift in the neutral position.

    • 3

Release the brakes, and depress the clutch pedal to the floor as far as it will go. This is engaging the clutch.

    • 4

Increase throttle speed gradually, releasing the clutch pedal slowly and smoothly at the same time. Keep the two motions balanced until the tractor starts to move, and let out the clutch pedal steadily until it is fully released.
