How to Build an Inexpensive Picket Fence

Picket fences do not require intricate work or expensive tools or supplies to build, making them a budget-friendly and attractive fencing option. Choose the height of the fence you wish to install according to your needs and any local zoning or community restrictions. Because a picket fence is not solid, you don't need as much wood as with barrier fencing.

  • Measuring tape
  • Post hole digger
  • String

Instructions

    • 1

Set the fence posts between six and eight feet apart. Dig holes for the corner fence posts first, and insert the posts in the holes. Attach a string to the corner posts so you dig the other post’s holes in line with the corner posts.

    • 2

Insert the other posts into their holes. Mix and pour concrete into the openings around the posts. Drive stakes into the ground to hold boards up against the posts, keeping the posts vertical while the cement dries.

    • 3

Nail a top rail to the backside of the fence posts once the cement has fully dried, three to four inches from the tops of the posts. Nail a lower rail to the backside of the fence posts, two to three inches from the ground.

Nail the pickets to the bottom and top rails on the fence. Space the pickets the width of one picket apart from each other by placing a loose picket next to an installed picket, and then placing the next picket to be nailed so it touches the other side of the picket.
