Aluminum Roofing Styles

Unlike traditional asphalt roofing which absorbs heat, aluminum roofing styles provide a reflective surface that bounces heat away from the home. A low maintenance guarantee and a 20 to 50 year warranty add further value to the aluminum roof. Using a modular pressed format, manufacturers can reproduce most traditional roofing styles -- shake, shingle, slate -- using aluminum. Vertical seam and corrugated aluminum panel systems are other roof options. Even clay tile roofs can be replicated in aluminum.
  1. Modular Pressed Aluminum

    • Modular press-formed aluminum roofs are produced in cedar shake, asphalt shingle and slate styles. The aluminum material is formed in a press to match the appearance of traditional roofing. The details of a shingle, shake and slate roofing tile are replicated and then coated and colored per the manufacturer's specifications. This roofing type is produced in interlocking panels meaning that two or more tiles are impressed on the aluminum creating a panel. The panels are assembled by overlapping to build a watertight covering.

    Aluminum Tile

    • Homeowners with traditional Mediterranean style homes may be interested in an aluminum tile roof. Traditional clay tiles are replicated in aluminum and coated with color and other protective layers that prevent corrosion and damage to the metal. The same graceful curve and style is evident without the weight and fragility of a clay tile. The aluminum tiles resist the damage of hail and heavy weather that clay tiles do not. They are created in panels and are applied to the roof in an overlap technique similar to the modular press-formed tiles.

    Vertical Seam Panels

    • Vertical seam aluminum roof panels can be purchased as an interlock or snaplock system, as a nail strip panel or as a crimp roofing panel. Each type of assembly presents a similar profile once it is installed -- a vertical, ribbed panel that begins at the peak and extends to the roof's edge. These panels can be ordered in a variety of standard colors. Some manufacturers may offer custom colors for larger orders. Vertical seam roofs are used in both commercial and residential application and present a modern, industrial look that looks good on a rustic or contemporary traditional building.

    Corrugated Aluminum

    • Corrugated aluminum is a traditional aluminum roofing profile that looks similar to the channels and ribs of corrugated cardboard. Roofing manufacturers vary on the rib height and length of panels they make. Most include a standard rib width known as type B which is a 36-inch wide panel with ribs 6 inches on center and a 2 1/2-inch channel. Rib widths can vary from 2 1/2 to 8 inches on center. Corrugated aluminum roofs present a casual and rustic look and are often used on barns, sheds and other outbuildings.
