Guide to Porch & Deck Design & Construction

Porches and decks are both exterior open spaces that extend the house into the outdoors, but the design and construction of each is different. Porches can be an important part of the architectural composition of the house and neighborhood, and decks often evolve organically around the tastes of the people in the home. Both porches and decks create additional space for the home, adding to its value.
  1. Porch and Deck

    • There are significant differences between porches and decks. Porches are enclosed overhead, and usually they form an integral part of the architecture of the house. They serve as a transitional space to the house, presenting both a welcoming and stately face to the public. Decks reflect a casual, outdoor lifestyle, usually designed as the private domain of the household and its visitors. Porches are typically detailed to complement the architecture of the house; deck designs range from generic to sophisticated.

    Porches

    • Traditionally, front porches are planned at a larger scale with more prominent features than side or rear porches. Consider porches on neighboring properties for visual cues about design decisions to establish harmony with your neighbors' property. The porch design should also correspond with the detailing on the house itself, such as materials, trim and color. In some locations porches may represent the historic character of a neighborhood, in which case the architectural details may even be regulated.

    Decks

    • Decks are primarily recreational amenities. Deck design is focused on function as well as appearance; they're often outfitted with kitchen facilities, barbecues, fireplaces and hot tubs, inviting people to spend more time outside. On sloped ground they can be constructed in levels, creating more functional space. The simplicity of deck construction invites the clean lines of modern design, but elements such as railings can be detailed to reinforce the architectural character of the house for other styles.

    Construction

    • Construction of the porch is more complex than for a deck; even a simple roof requires structural support and associated trim. Details such as fascia and eaves should be similar to the rest of the house and may include decorative work. Components that are exposed to weather need to be waterproofed and painted. Deck construction is straightforward; focus your attention on foundation support and handrails if required. Decking materials include wood, wood composite and low-maintenance products such as vinyl membrane coverings.
