How to Fix a Hole in a Cement Block

The key to repairing any damage to a cement surface is to act as quickly as possible. When a crack or hole appears in concrete, you must patch it as soon as you notice it. Otherwise, the damage will spread to the rest of the block and may even spread to other blocks. Cement patching compound will fix the damage while providing the support needed to keep the block from crumbling any further.

Instructions

    • 1

Break up the loose or cracked material around the edge of the hole with a cold chisel and a mallet. Hold the chisel at the edge of the hole at a 45-degree angle and tap it with the mallet.

    • 2

Clean out the hole with a wire brush. This will also break up any loose materials still clinging to the inside of the hole. Wipe all of the dust out of the hole.

    • 3

Spritz the inside of the hole with a spray bottle full of water. This will prevent the patching compound from drying too quickly, which can be a detriment to the bond between the fresh patching compound and the old concrete.

    • 4

Mix the commercial cement patching compound as directed by the manufacturer. Some compounds come premixed, but some require you to add water. Read the label carefully before using the compound.

    • 5

Hold a piece of scrap wood or a paint scraper against the block just below the hole to prevent spills. Scoop up some of the prepared compound with a putty knife or trowel and spread it over the hole.

    • 6

Press the compound into the hole with your putty knife or trowel. When the hole is packed, spread more compound over the area with your trowel, smooth it out and scrape away the excess so the fresh compound is flush with the block. Allow the compound to dry completely.
