Turning a Covered Deck into a Sunroom

Turning a covered deck into a sun room is a big project that you cannot complete alone. Before you do any building or remodeling on your property, you need expert advice and any permits required by law in your locality. It's a lot of hard work, but you'll be able to enjoy your sun room year-round, while decks are cold and uncomfortable through the winter. Convert your deck the right way starting from the beginning of the project and avoid costly mistakes later.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult a professional architect or contractor before starting. Not all decks are suitable for sun-room conversion. You also want to be certain your roof and foundation are strong enough to support the project.

    • 2

Take measurements of the space. Record the height, width and depth of the entire space and the current size of the deck railings and doorways.

    • 3

Take pictures of the space from several angles using a digital camera or camera phone.

    • 4

Meet with a professional draftsman or architect to have plans drawn up for your sun room. The professional needs the measurements and pictures you took of the space, and may ask to come to your property to gather additional information. In some counties and municipalities, you must submit professional drawings to obtain a permit.

    • 5

Submit the finished plans and a written description of the project to your county or municipal building department. Do not start any work until your plans are approved and you receive a permit. If you start the job without a permit where one is required, you are breaking the law.

    • 6

Purchase all windows, doors and materials you need for the project. A list of required materials may be included with the project plans provided by the professional contractor.

    • 7

Hire contractors, or ask your contractor to hire subcontractors, to install the framework, drywall, windows and doors, or install these items yourself if you are proficient in this type of work.

    • 8

Lay flooring or carpeting as desired. Place the sub-flooring first, then install the floorboards or pieces of laminate, or roll a carpet out over the area. Hire a professional to install flooring if you are not sure you can do it without making costly mistakes.

    • 9

Paint the walls with primer using paint rollers, and allow the primer to dry for 24 to 48 hours before applying paint or wallpaper.
