How to Connect a Porch to a Log Wall

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the log wall to fit your base plate. You need a base plate to secure the stabilizers and posts for the porch.

    • 2

Cut a 2-by-12-inch piece of wood that matches your log wall to make a base plate. If you don’t have a miter saw, you can have the wood cut to your specifications at your home improvement store or lumberyard.

    • 3

Attach the base plate to the log wall with the 4-inch wood screws. Use your electric drill to drive the screws in tight. Secure three screws in a vertical line every 12 inches until you reach the end of the wall.

    • 4

Caulk between the base plate and the log wall to create a water barrier. The caulk will help prevent standing water between the wood.

    • 5

Install metal joist hangers on the base plate to attach the floor joists. Offset the hangers with the wood screws.
