Lay roof underlayment along the valleys and the peak of the roof onto which you want to install the concrete tiles. Use first an 18-inch strip of underlayment, cut to the length of the valleys or peak, securing the underlayment with a roofing nail every 6 inches. Cover each 18-inch strip with a 36-inch strip, securing the strip with nails to provide double coverage to the peak and all valleys.
Cover the rest of the roof with underlayment. Start by laying out a row of underlayment, cut to the roof’s length, at the eave of the roof and lay each subsequent row of underlayment so it overlaps the row before by at least 4 inches.
Install metal flashing across the base of the roof, along the eave, and along any valleys from the peak of the roof to the bottom of the roof. Nail the flashing to the roof with a nail every 6 inches and use as many pieces of flashing as necessary to line the entire eave.
Measure the height of the concrete roof tiles that you want to install. Subtract 1 inch from the length of the tiles and measure this distance up from the eave of the roof at each end, marking the roof with chalk. Snap a chalk line between the marks.
Spread a 2-inch bed of mortar over the surface of the roof beneath the chalk line. Apply the concrete roof tiles in a row so they touch on their edges, across the eave of the roof, driving two concrete nails through the top of each tile. One inch of each tile should extend past the roof edge.
Lay the tiles in rows going up the roof, overlapping the row below by at least 4 inches. When installing each row, stagger the seams so they don’t line up with the seams in the row below. Complete the main parts of the roof with this method.
Install a concrete roof cap on the roof peak. Secure the cap with four nails through each side. Cover the nails in the roof caps and all the seams in the concrete roof tiles with roofing cement.
