How to Put Siding on Mobile Homes

Installing siding on mobile homes requires the same process as installing siding on a traditional house. You must use a vinyl siding tool to complete the installation work, which you can purchase at a local hardware store. The installation process does not require a high degree of home improvement knowledge, but the work is redundant and can take a significant amount of time if your mobile home is large. Plan to perform the job when there is little to no wind or precipitation, both of which can complicate the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a single row of vinyl siding on the very bottom of the mobile home exterior. Hold a torpedo level along the top edge of the siding to ensure it sits level, then drive nails through the mounting holes on both ends and the middle of the siding strip.

    • 2

Overlap the vinyl strips horizontally by a quarter inch. Overlap successive rows of trim over lower rows, so the lip on the bottom of the siding overlaps the lip at the top of the lower siding. Trim the siding strips with a utility knife, so the siding fits on the wall and borders obstacles, such as doors and windows.

    • 3

Cut siding channel pieces to fit around doors and windows, nailing the channel pieces around the perimeter of the windows and doors. Leave the top and side channel pieces around windows 2-inches longer than the window measures, helping prevent leaks later.

    • 4

Nail strips of utility trim along the top of the mobile home’s walls. Nail the final strip of vinyl siding to the utility trim. Insert a vinyl siding tool onto the lip on the bottom edge of each row of vinyl siding.

    • 5

Slide the tool along the strips of vinyl siding, hooking it onto the top edge of the siding below. Press against the bottom edge of the siding strips until you hear it click, which indicates that it fastened onto the top edge of the lower siding strips.
