Remove any exterior trim pieces, such as door trim, window trim and window shutters. It helps to mark the pieces as you remove them to avoid confusion when reinstalling them. The trim is often easy to remove with a power drill and screwdriver bit, but a pry bar and hammer may be required if the trim is nailed in place.
Paint the exterior walls of the mobile home white or an off-white color. Sponge-painting exterior walls with a color two shades lighter or darker than the base coat helps to give a textured appearance, like stucco.
Draw a design of the mobile home on paper to determine the best way to lay out the timber pieces. You can choose any variation of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines; diagonal lines work especially well above windows and doorways because they help to frame and elongate these features. One common design is to grid the exterior in horizontal and vertical lines, then add one long diagonal line at each end of the home. Alternatively, cover the exterior in a fan of diagonal lines to create a sunburst pattern, then add a few vertical pieces to give the illusion of height, which helps to balance the length of the mobile home.
Paint 1-by-4-inch boards and the exterior trim pieces dark brown or black. Allow them time to dry and apply a second coat if needed for full coverage.
Reinstall the exterior trim pieces.
Nail the 1-by-4-inch painted boards to the exterior of the mobile home, using the drawing as a guide. Make mitered cuts to the ends of diagonally-laid boards so they fit properly against the edges of the mobile home, windows and doors.
