How to Build a Front Courtyard

The front courtyard landscape design is the first part of the home visitors see, and it sets the theme for the outdoor design. The front yard design should be carefully planned to serve functional purposes, while complementing the home's design and adding beauty. Every part of the front yard should be considered in the front courtyard design, including the road and front door of the home. The landscape should direct the visitors to the front of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate trees in the front courtyard design. They help control how much light enters the courtyard. Choose trees that are commensurate with the size of the home, and they should complement the overall courtyard design. Larger trees such as olive or oak trees are excellent for shade and help keep the home cool during the hot summer months. Fruit trees and ornamentals such as crepe myrtles or citrus trees may also be incorporated in the design. Avoid planting deciduous trees or other shedding tree types near driveways that can leave a mess.

    • 2

Plant shrubs such as boxwood and other ornamentals to create a linear pattern around sidewalks and paths, and around the exterior of the home.

    • 3

Add some personality to the courtyard design with flowers. A combination of annuals provides year-round color, while perennials provide foliage in warmer climates. There are many flower varieties from which to choose. Select the flowers according to the overall design. Bright reds attract attention, while calmer shades of blue and green create a serene atmosphere. Use flower beds to line the home's perimeter and accent walkways.

    • 4

Encourage your guests to approach the home with sidewalks and driveways made of durable weather-resistant materials such as stone, brick or concrete. Select materials that complement the home’s design. Large courtyards could incorporate a circular driveway to add elegance while providing guests and home residents an easy way in and out of the home.

    • 5

Connect the interior of the home to the exterior courtyard with decorations. Add benches and/or a table with chairs, as well as swings and other furniture, to create an inviting and comfortable place to sit. Select furniture that matches both the interior and exterior of the home.

    • 6

Add potted plants and decorative planters to accent the entrance area of the home. Creeping vines around railings and banisters create a classic garden appearance in the courtyard.

    • 7

Add a water feature to create a sense of tranquility in the courtyard. A decorative fountain can be the focal point of the courtyard.
