How to Cut Vinyl Roofing for a Carport

Because of its ease of handling and installation, corrugated vinyl or PVC roofing is the ideal material for covering utility structures such as carports and storage sheds. In addition, transparent polycarbonate sheets allow natural light through when used used on pergolas and covered porches. However, since the material comes in standard lengths, you must use a special technique to cut the lowest panels to size.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Felt-tipped pen
  • Straight edge
  • 60 tooth carbide-tipped, plastic cutting blade
  • Circular saw
  • Straight piece of 2-by-4 lumber
  • Clamps

Instructions

    • 1

Place the corrugated PVC sheet on a workbench. Measure and mark the cut location on the top of the corrugation nearest both sides of the sheet with a steel measuring tape and felt-tipped pen. Place a straight edge on both marks and scribe a cut line across the sheet.

    • 2

Fit a 7.25-inch diameter, 60 tooth carbide-tipped, plastic cutting blade into a circular saw. Adjust the blade to the maximum cutting depth.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the inside edge of the blade and the left side of the saw. Transfer this measurement to the sheet and clamp a straight piece of 2-by-4 lumber onto the sheet to act as a fence; position the clamp at the highest point of the outer corrugations and do not risk cracking the sheet by overtightening the clamps.

    • 4

Move the sheet so that the inner edge of the cut line protrudes over the edge of the bench by about an inch. Place the saw on the sheet and ensure that the blade lines up with the cut line.

    • 5

Have a helper support the underside on the far end of the sheet so that it can vibrate while you cut; this will minimize chipping. Press the trigger. Maintain downward pressure on the saw while pushing the blade slowly along the line to complete the cut.
