How to Install Organic Roof Ply

Organic roof ply serves as an underlayment for most roofing types including wood shingles, asphalt shingles and metal panels. Like other underlayments, organic ply installs directly to a roof’s unfinished surface, known as the roof deck, before installing the visible roofing. The soft layer provides both insulation and added protection to the materials beneath the roof. Install the organic ply like any standard roofing felt.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll organic roof ply out along the surface of the roof just above the eave. Shift the roof ply so that one-half inch of the loose end hangs off one edge of the roof. Continue rolling out the ply until it extends one-half inch off the opposite side of the roof as well. Cut the ply to this length.

    • 2

Move the roof ply down to hang off the eave by 1 inch and smooth the roof ply out over the roof’s surface. Place a staple through the roof ply at both the top and bottom of one end, 1 ½ inches in from the side edge, 1 inch from the top edge and 2 inches from the bottom edges. Go up the roof ply’s side edge, placing a staple every 6 inches, and then across the ply’s top and bottom, placing staples every 6 inches.

    • 3

Roll out the roof ply across the roof above the first strip. Cut the ply down so that one-half inch of ply hangs off both edges of the roof. Move the roof ply down overlapping the first strip by 4 to 6 inches and place staples at 6-inch spacing, 1 ½ inches in from each side edge and 1 inch in from the top and bottom edges.

Cut and secure as many strips of organic roof ply as necessary, using the same 4- to 6-inch overlap covering the entire side of the roof up to the ridge. When you finish the first side of the roof, move to the opposite side and repeat the process. Begin along the eave and move up to the ridge.
