Exterior Raised-Panel Shutter Installation

Raised panel shutters are a more heavy-duty version of the louvered shutters that are common on many homes. Panel shutters feature solid surfaces of wood that are mounted inside of wooden frames. A raised panel shutter can be permanently affixed next to a window as a decorative accent, or mounted on hinges to create a functional shutter that can be closed to protect the window from inclement weather.

Instructions

  1. Install Fixed Raised-Panel Shutters

    • 1

Drill a small pilot hole into all four corners of each shutter. Make the diameter of the hole just large enough so that the screw shaft will slide through it without the threads engaging.

    • 2

Hold the shutter up next to the window. Having an assistant to help you with this job makes it much easier. Have your assistant hold the shutter in place, doing this from inside the window if you're above the ground floor. Stand back and take a look at the shutter to be sure it looks right in relation to the window.

    • 3

Drive a screw into each of the four holes at the corners of the shutters.

    Install Functional Raised-Panel Shutters

    • 4

Screw two hinges to one side of each shutter, one hinge about 4 inches below the top edge and the other about 4 inches above the bottom edge. Position the barrel of the hinge at the front of the shutter, so the shutter can swing forward and in front of the window.

    • 5

Attach the shutter to the window by screwing the hinge into the side of the window frame. Have your assistant hold the shutter so it is pointing away from the house, giving you access to the hinge for screwing.

    • 6

Swing the shutter back against the surface of the wall. Screw a hook to the side of the shutter and an eye bolt to the wall in a position where the hook will engage with it. Keep the shutters hooked open until you need them.
