How to Install Vinyl J Channel Around Brick

If you have a brick home, it likely has some wooden exterior components. As you cover those components with vinyl siding during an exterior remodel, vinyl J channel pieces serve as transition pieces where the brick and vinyl walls meet. J channel gets its name from its appearance. As you look at the side profile of these plastic strips, they resemble the letter “J.” Connecting vinyl J channel to the brick is a quick and easy part of the vinyl installation process.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the J channel so the bottom of the “J” is against the brick and the longer flat side of the piece is against the wooden portion of the house. Nail the J channel to the wall using the openings in the J channel. Use nails long enough to penetrate at least 3/4 inch into the house’s sheathing.

    • 2

Do not hammer the nails in all the way. Allow enough clearance to slip a dime between the vinyl and the nail head to allow the J channel to move slightly as the temperature changes.

    • 3

Continue nailing the J channel against the brick edges. Space nails no more than 12 inches apart on vertical pieces and 16 inches on horizontal pieces. Place nails in the center of the openings on the J channel. Cut J channel, as necessary, with tin snips.

Drill 3/8-inch drain holes spaced 24 inches apart in the bottom of the “J” on J channel that may retain water.

    • 5

Fit the ends of vinyl siding into the J channel. Nail the vinyl siding to the wooden sheathing with nails long enough to penetrate 3/4 inch into the wood. Start at the bottom of the section and work your way up, interlocking each piece of siding with the piece below it.
