How to Waterproof OSB Behind Vinyl Siding

All siding applications require some form of wall paneling that is installed before the siding is mounted so that it has something to attach to. In addition, all siding needs some form of waterproofing before the actual siding can be installed. With vinyl siding, the most common type of waterproofing used on top of the plywood or OSB paneling is a sheet of tar-based felt paper or a house wrap, both of which are installed in the same fashion. Once the wall is covered, you can install the vinyl siding and protect your home from the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a wall to start with and measure its length from one side to the other with a tape measure. Unroll felt paper or house wrap to this length and cut it off with a utility knife so that you have a section that is as long as the wall.

    • 2

Hold the cut-off section of waterproofing up against the bottom section of the wall so that it runs all the way to the ground. Use a hammer tacker to staple the waterproofing layer in place. Tack it up between 6 and 12 inches apart and make sure that the waterproofing is kept flat in between the stapled sections. Work your way down the row.

Cut another section of waterproofing to the same length as the first row. Install this layer on top of the first row so that it overlaps the first one by at least 2 to 4 inches and tack it in place against the OSB. Repeat the process as you work your way up, row by row and wall by wall, and use the utility knife to cut around windows and other openings. Install your vinyl siding after you are finished.
