Before you begin dealing with your torch applied roof safety, you must see to safety issues common to all roofing projects. Mount your ladder firmly and attach it to the roof with a safety line. Be aware of your distance from the edge of the roof, and walk on sections you have confirmed will bear your weight. Because torch applied roofing usually is used on flat roofs, you don't have to worry about slipping and falling like you would on a pitched roof. Always check below before throwing scrap over the side, and never store equipment where it might get knocked off the roof.
The torch for this kind of roofing is a propane gas torch on a long hose. These are typically safe -- if you confirm they're in good repair before use. Check the propane canister for rust or chips on the nozzle, and the hose for kinks, cracks or leaks. Store the can where it won't fall, and run the hose through an area where it won't be bumped, stepped on or tangled.
Wear thick, protective clothing while applying torchdown roofing. This should include thick boots, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and work gloves. Avoid rubber, nylon and similar materials. These will melt if you pass a hot torch over them, meaning the burning material can melt and stick to your skin. Natural fibers such as cotton and wool will smolder and burn.
Have a burn treatment station ready on the roof when working with torch applied roofing materials. This can be a set of chemical cold packs, ice in a cooler or simply your construction-grade cooler filled with water and ice. These won't help with third-degree burns from long, direct exposure to the torch. However, applying cold immediately to second- and first-degree burns will reduce the severity and healing time of the injury.
It's possible to start full-blown, or smoldering, fires while working with torchdown roofing. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand at all times to immediately put out any fires that start. Good technique with the torch should prevent these fires from starting, but an extinguisher will keep them from growing out of control
