How to Repaint Exterior FRP

Fiberglass reinforced plastic, commonly shortened to FRP, is commonly used in bathrooms and other areas with frequent moisture. The plastic is water-resistant and easy to clean, and the fiberglass makes it sturdy and durable. Fiberglass reinforced plastic panels are usually sold in plain white sheets, but you can paint them in any color you desire using latex and acrylic products. As with most surfaces, FRP must be properly prepared before you can start painting it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the fiberglass reinforced plastic panel thoroughly with hot soapy water and a cloth. Pay particular attention to any grooves that may have accumulated dirt -- this is particularly important if this is wood-look FRP.

    • 2

Sand the FRP with medium- to fine-grade sandpaper. Use small circular motions to sand until you have roughened the entire surfaces of the FRP. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth.

    • 3

Stir latex primer thoroughly until it is well-mixed and uniform in color. Pour the primer into a paint tray. Roll the primer on the FRP in a "W" pattern. This method helps cut down on streaking.

    • 4

Mix the acrylic paint thoroughly as you did with the primer. Pour the paint into a paint tray, then roll it onto the panel using the same method you used with the primer. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 5

Paint a second and third coat on the panel if desired. Allow the paint to dry between each coat.
