Guide to HardiBoard Siding Styles

James Hardie fiber-cement siding is backed by a 30-year limited warranty and guaranteed not to rot, chip or split. Because it is thicker than vinyl and aluminum siding, it is also more resistant to pests, wind and hail damage. Hardie siding is available in three basic styles that are manufactured in a range of textures and colors.
  1. HardiePlank Lap Siding

    • Lap siding is made as wide planks that are installed horizontally so that each plank overlaps over another. Although similar in appearance to clapboard siding, HardiePlank lap siding is slightly larger, produced in widths ranging from 5 1/4 inches to 12 inches and in lengths of 12 feet. HardiePlank lap siding offers the traditional look of wood siding, but is made of low-maintenance and durable fiber-cement.

    HardieShingle Siding

    • HardieShingle siding resembles cedar shingles but is made from fiber-cement. This style of Hardie siding comes in a selection of widths, with staggered edge panels or half-round shingles manufactured in panels that are 48 inches long and 16 inches high or individual shingles manufactured in 6, 8 or 12 inch widths. The range of options allows you to use HardieShingle siding as a primary siding or to complement another style to create a distinct look.

    HardiePanel Vertical Siding

    • James Hardie offers vertical siding with its HardiePanel style siding line. Also made from fiber-cement, it is engineered for use with HardieTrim boards to provide a traditional board-and-batten look to your home. This style of Hardie siding is available in 4-inch wide, 5/16-inch thick panels that may be 8, 9 or 10 feet long.

    Color and Texture

    • Hardie vertical, lap or shingle siding is offered in a range of colors and textures. HardiePanel vertical siding is available in Cedarmill, which has a cedar grain texture, Sierra 8, which also has a wood grain texture, smooth and stucco textures. Hardie’s plank lap siding is also available in Cedarmill and smooth designs but with the option of beaded edges as well. HardieShingle siding varies only in edge design, with straight, rounded or staggered options. All Hardie siding styles are available in several colors that range from whites to blues and browns.

    The HardieZone System

    • James Hardie offers vertical, lap and shingle style siding in one of two types that are manufactured according to different climatic variables that affect the durability of siding. The HZ5 product line is designed for climate zones 1 through 5. HZ10 is designed for zones 6 through 10. HZ5 siding is for northern climates with freezing temperatures, ice and snow during winter months and temperature variations through each season. This line of siding is given increased moisture resistance and a drip edge added to the lap style of siding to improve water runoff and prevent ice buildup. HZ10 siding is for southern and coastal regions with salty sea air, humidity, heat and extreme weather such as hurricanes.
