How to Make a Grill That's Built In

People who enjoy the outdoors can add amenities to their decks and patios to extend their living space. It is not uncommon to see multilevel decks, elaborate lighting, hot tubs and outdoor fireplaces as well as built-in barbeque grills that enhance outdoor living. While hiring a professional to hook up a gas grill connection and achieve professional results may be the best idea, it is possible for a do-it-yourselfer to create a built-in barbeque grill.

Instructions

    • 1

Research built-in grill options and select the size you need and the style you like. Decide if you want a grill with burners or other amenities. Pick out the stone or brick you will use to face the built-in unit.

    • 2

Select a suitable location for your built-in grill. The grill should be far enough away from the home for safety, but close enough for convenience. It should be easy to see from inside the house, also for safety. Make sure there are no flammable materials near the grill.

    • 3

Build the grill enclosure with cinder block to provide a suitable surface for the exterior stone or brick. Install an angle iron to support the cement slab under the grill. Construct the door frame out of metal framing. Secure it with the stone or brick and mortar.

    • 4

Install cement board for the base of the cement slab that will go under the grill. Place the cement board on the angle iron, and pour cement on top of the board. Set the cap stones on top of the built-in unit and inspect them to make sure they fit the space well before securing them with mortar.

    • 5

Use another piece of metal channel to support the stone or brick behind the grill, and frame the section behind the grill with cement board. Install the doors and slide in the grill.
