How to Change Door Bells

Many homes have flimsy, plastic doorbell buttons that don't do much for the look of the space around the front door. A relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade to improve the look of the area is to change the doorbell. Home improvement stores sell doorbells in many different colors, sizes and styles, ensuring you'll be able to find one that complements the look of your specific front door. Add a brushed steel doorbell to a home with brushed steel door hardware, for instance.

Instructions

  1. Doorbell

    • 1

Shut off the circuit breaker that provides power to the area of the home with the doorbell.

    • 2

Unscrew the existing doorbell by turning its mounting screws counterclockwise. When you remove the screws, gently pull the doorbell assembly away from the wall and turn it so you can see the wires connected to its rear.

    • 3

Loosen the screw terminals on the rear of the doorbell assembly until the two wires come free. You don't need to keep track of which wire goes where; with doorbells, the two wires are interchangeable.

    • 4

Wrap the two wires to the screw terminals on the new doorbell and tighten the screws.

    • 5

Screw the new doorbell to the wall using its mounting screws. Restore power to the area.

    Chime Unit

    • 6

Shut off the power to the area of your home that contains the doorbell chime unit. This unit is typically located in a central area, so that you can hear it throughout the home.

    • 7

Remove the chime unit by unscrewing the screws and pulling it away from the wall. Unscrew the wires from their connectors and note how they connected to the existing unit. Unlike the wires to the doorbell, the placement of the wires in the chime unit matters.

    • 8

Connect the wires to the new unit in the same way that they were connected to the unit you removed. For example, if a wire coming from the wall is black, connect it to the black wire in the chime unit. Ensure that the wire connected to the "Front" terminal on the old unit is connected to the "Front" terminal on the new unit.

    • 9

Attach the new unit to the wall with its mounting screws. Restore power to the area and test the new doorbell.
