How to Fix a Crumbling Cement Porch

While many people automatically assume that a crumbling cement section on their porch is a sign that the porch is falling apart and needs to be replaced, the reality is that most crumbling sections are just little patch areas that can be quickly repaired. While they are normally the result of improper mixing or installation methods during the installation of the porch, sometimes natural movement such as earthquakes or settling of the slab can cause the concrete to crumble. Patching a crumbling section of your porch is a quick and easy affair that can be completed in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any of the crumbled sections of concrete and completely clean the area. Sweep the debris free of the area and vacuum it out to remove all of the particles and dust that can impede the bond of the new concrete. For extra measures, wipe the area down with a damp rag to clean the last vestiges of dirt from the surface. Let the surface dry.

    • 2

Mix up some concrete mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve a mortarlike mixture. Use the tip of the flat metal trowel to mix up your mortar. In another bucket, mix up a cement slurry mix by pouring some cement into the bucket and adding water. Stir it with the paintbrush until you achieve a paintable mixture.

    • 3

Apply the cement slurry to the area that needs to be fixed. Paint it onto the area and ensure that the liquid cement slurry fills all the cracks and voids left behind. Before it dries, scoop out some mortar from your other bucket and apply the mortar on top of the slurry. Smooth it over the patch area with your flat trowel to match the surrounding concrete. Let it dry for 72 hours before allowing foot traffic.
